We make use of the character and location of the building - taller than neighbouring buildings, surrounded by vistas - by creating open facades aimed at good views. At the same time we maintain proper orientation of these open facades towards the sun to optimally benefit from thermal solar energy in winter. Conservatories improve the use of solar energy in winter and block the sun in summer. The building has a minimum envelope with maximum volume and good insulation to reduce its energy use. Solar thermal collectors on the roof produce hot water for central heating and tap water.
We propose to build a flexible concrete structure, a column-and-beam system. The flexible structure enables many different options in apartment layouts. Also, it provides opportunities for retrofit at a later stage. We cover the concrete structure with light-weight timber facades. We use domestic materials in a natural state, such as pine timber, raw concrete, and blank steel and aluminium. The coloured glass facades en natural materials contrast nicely with the surrounding heavy brick architecture.
